Varied Carpet Beetles

Varied Carpet Beetles

The multicolored Varied Carpet Beetles are tiny indoor anomalies that are often seen on furniture, curtains, and carpets. This beetle in larval form (baby to young adult) is commonly found in houses while adults are usually found outside feeding off of pollen. Although they have been known to do little harm they are still seen as a nuisance to homeowners and during the summer it is impossible to eradicate them completely from the home.
While adults are pollen grazers, larvae feed on natural fibers and can damage carpets, furniture, clothing, and insect collections. Adult beetles usually lay their eggs in air ducts, in closets, under furniture, and under baseboards. Once hatched and until they are fully grown, the larvae hide in dark, undisturbed areas and feed on organic material. The larvae are thus responsible for the damage of items such as furniture, clothing, blankets, furs, and carpets.
Infestations can be prevented by regular vacuum cleaning, dry cleaning or airing clothing outside, and removing abandoned bird and insect nests attached to the building. Another sign would be irritated itchy welts from the shed hairs of larvae, these are commonly confused with bedbug bites. Varied Carpet Beetles are known to be very hard to get rid of so if you have any signs of an infestation call Western Exterminator at 817-834-3121 and sign up for your free consultation and evaluation today.
